Job Description

This is a locum appointment in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery to join the team of sixteen Orthopaedic Surgeons at the Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.

The post has become available due to the retirement of one of the substantive shoulder Consultants. The successful applicant is required to assist in the delivery of both trauma and elective shoulder and elbow surgery, and to help meet access targets in both outpatient and inpatient settings. The post is initially for 6 months.

Applicants are required to be fully registered with the GMC, have FRCS (T&O) and be on the specialist register or be within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.

Please note that appointment to this post will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Check at Enhanced level.

Main duties of the job

The post is to provide both trauma and elective Lower Limb Arthroplasty surgery.

Elective clinics are at Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone hospitals as well as peripheral hospitals including a combined limb reconstruction clinic with the plastic surgeons at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead. Day surgery lists and inpatient elective lists are in Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone and trauma lists at Tunbridge Wells.

Working for our organisation

The Trust provides general hospital services to a population of approximately 480,000 in West Kent and North East Sussex, and some specialist services to a considerably larger population. Maidstone Hospital has a stand alone Orthopaedic Theatre with a 12 bedded Orthopaedic ward attached. There is a day surgery unit and elective and fracture clinics run daily.

The Tunbridge Wells Hospital is located in Pembury adjacent to the A21. It is the first NHS hospital where all main wards are comprised entirely of single rooms with en suite bathrooms. The hospital is a Trauma Unit in the South East London, Kent & Medway Trauma Network, and has a close working relationship with King’s College Hospital which is the major trauma centre for the network. There are 2 dedicated elective Orthopaedic theatres, a trauma theatre which runs 8.30 am to 6 pm seven days a week, and every weekday morning there is an additional Consultant delivered specialist trauma list.

Members of the department are heavily involved in the regional orthopaedic teaching programme and in the running of local ATLS courses.

15 Consultants work within the department. Currently there is a post CCT fellow in shoulder surgery. We have 10 SpRs from the KSS deanery, 2 core trainees, foundation doctors and 3 Physician Associates. We are supported by an Orthogeriatric team.
