  • $34+ per hour based on experience and qualifications

About the Position

First Transit is seeking Lead Technicians / Shop Foremen to lead maintenance operations on first, second & third shifts for the largest university bus fleet in the company. This fleet includes vehicles for Rutgers University campus shuttle!

This role is responsible for the coordination and supervision of shop operations, including assigning, monitoring, and reviewing progress and accuracy of repairs and services for the bus fleet. You will set the focus for our technicians based on guidance from the Maintenance Management team and provide technical guidance on more complex issues as needed. You will also be responsible for:

  • Performing vehicle maintenance to the First Transit standards.
  • Diagnosing all phases of vehicle and equipment repair.
  • Removing, cleaning, repairing, reinstalling, and adjusting vehicle components
  • Evaluating completed work prior to release
  • Performing road calls and emergency services as necessary.
  • Actively participating in safety or educational training as required.
  • Completing special projects as assigned.


  • Vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair is preferred
  • At least 3 years of diesel fleet experience required; transit bus fleet experience is preferred
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience in a lead technician or other management role requiring a thorough knowledge of safe working practices, DOT, OSHA, and other federal and state regulations
  • Valid CDL, Class A or B with Passenger & Airbrake Endorsements is required
  • Appropriate mechanic's toolset
  • ASE certifications are strongly preferred. Must be willing to obtain ASEs while employed.
